Chair's Corner

A Word from Chairman Aaron Peskin

November 2, 2010 was an historic election for San Francisco and California. For the first time ever, the San Francisco Democratic Party and the San Francisco Labor Council coordinated efforts to get out the vote in San Francisco. With the invaluable support of hundreds of volunteers, contributors and community partners, we were able to reach out to thousands of voters throughout San Francisco.

Though there were many high-profile Democratic losses around the country, Democrats throughout California defied the national trend and turned out in record numbers to elect Democrats in all 9 statewide offices.  San Francisco played a critical role in holding back the red tide that swept across the country but stopped at the California border.

An analysis of our local voter outreach efforts reveal that voter turnout in San Francisco played a critical role in numerous victories for statewide candidates. Key highlights of our efforts include:

  • 5,000 Democrats registered to vote in 2010 through the San Francisco Democratic
    Party’s efforts.
  • Highest Gubernatorial voter turnout in San Francisco in 24 years.
  • 78.9% of voters in San Francisco supported Jerry Brown for Governor, versus only 53.8%   statewide.
  •  In San Francisco, 185,842 votes were cast for Kamala Harris for Attorney General, and she won by a statewide margin of 74,157 votes. San Francisco Democrats played a critical role in her victory.
  •  San Franciscans overwhelmingly voted No on Prop 23, an initiative that would have eliminated thousands of clean energy jobs for Californians.

I want to sincerely thank all of our volunteers, union members and community activists for helping make possible our robust 2010 voter outreach program. I am proud to work with all of you as we continue to build the Democratic Party and stand up for the issues that matter most.

Sincerely,

Aaron Peskin
